In-dash computing coming to Fords

Ford has chosen Opera’s mobile web browser to be used in their upcoming in-dash computers. The computers which will be broadband capable, are going to be offered in their Ford F-150, Super Duty, E-Series and Transit Connect truck and van lines. Ford hopes to market these towards people who do their business on the road like contractors so they will have the ability to access things such as email and weather updates while on the go.

The mobile computer will have a 6.5″ high-resolution touch screen, 4GB of memory, wireless mouse/keyboard, a bluetooth battery powered ink-jet printer and a SD slot for added memory.

Time will tell whether or not this will help Ford with sales but one thing is for sure, we are going to see more and more vehicle computer innovation in the near future. I’d love to get my hands on one of these computers for my car, but I’m sure with the added distraction the Internet will bring, it won’t be long until automobile insurance prices sky rocket.
